Those unable to produce a license at time of registration are not permitted to compete in or practice on the track of the race in question (riders competing in district races at their home track may be excepted at the Track Operator's discretion). At Alberta BMX Cup races, it may be possible to verify membership with an ABA Membership list should a rider be unable to present their license; however, all such riders may be fined $10 (payable before the race begins); the fine may be waived if the license of the rider in question was processed less than 5 business days prior to the race in question. Note: This service is not available at CCA or UCI races, even those held in Alberta. Licenses may be sold by the ABA Technical Delegate at Alberta Cup BMX races; this is a stop-gap measure designed to allow those new to the sport to participate; in general, riders are expected to license with their home track well in advance of attending their first race of the year. Only fully complete license applications (full payment, forms filled out, waivers signed including parental waiver and proof of age for new riders) will be processed; licenses are not processed on Fridays. Upgrades:It is the nature of BMX that riders upgrade mid-season throughout their career. Riders are upgraded according to the following policy.Ability Class Upgrades (Male): Novice to Intermediate: 10 Wins Intermediate to Expert: 20 Wins Ability Class Upgrades (Female): Novice to Expert: 25 Wins All riders are required to upgrade upon receiving the requisite number of wins listed above. Failure to do so within 2 weeks (14 days) of achieving the required number of wins will result in a $50 fine and suspension from all racing until the upgrade is complete. When upgrading a rider must return their license to the ABA for replacement; the regulations prohibit a rider from holding more than 1 license at a time. Intermediate Males and Novice Females may request an early upgrade upon achieving 20 wins. To do so, such riders must write a letter to the ABA-BMX Committee quoting the reasons why they feel that an early upgrade is appropriate. The Alberta Bicycle Association BMX Committee will consider and approve or deny all such requests. Age-Based Upgrades: Age-based upgrades are not permitted for any reason. Examples: A 16 year old Expert rider is not permitted to upgrade to Junior. A Junior (17-18) age rider is not permitted an upgrade to Elite. Such upgrades are against UCI regulations. Amateur to Pro Upgrades: Any rider 17 or 18 years of age who wishes to upgrade to Junior, must write a letter to the ABA stating their intention to do so. Any rider age 19 or older who wishes to upgrade to Elite must write a letter to the ABA stating their intention to do so. All such riders are then considered Pro' for both 20 and Cruiser. Number Plate Note:Riders who upgrade (Novice to Intermediate, Intermediate to Expert, Novice to Expert (for female riders) or Amateur to Pro) must stop using their earned number if the said number is a P or C plate because they are both, age and ability award plates. However, W, N and AB plates can continue to be used because they are age group award plates. If a rider moves into an age group that spans 2 years or more, they must place a 0 in front of their awarded number (Example, AB4 in 16 Expert moves to 17-24 Expert and becomes AB04). If riders are to stop using their awarded plate because of an upgrade, from that point on, they use a number equal to the last 3 digits of their UCI Code. Additionally, if a rider upgrades from Amateur to Pro he/she may continue to use their awarded plate with the requirement of placing a zero (0) in front of the first digit on the plate. This new number must be used until such time as the rider achieves a new earned number.
