Welcome to the ABA! 

Whether you’re brand new to cycling or have been riding for years, this page is designed to help you navigate everything the ABA has to offer. If you’re interested in participating in fully insured, ABA-sanctioned programs and events, you’re in the right place — we’ve gathered all the essential information for you in one spot.

What is the ABA?

The Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA) is the not-for-profit Provincial Sport and Territorial Organization (PTSO) for cycling under Cycling Canada.

 

Mission: To advocate, develop, and facilitate cycling for all Albertans.

Vision: To be the recognized authority and leading voice for cycling in Alberta.

 

Funded through membership and Alberta Sport, Parks and Recreation (SPAR), the ABA provides opportunities for individuals to experience every form of cycling through its member clubs as well as programs facilitated either directly by the ABA or by affiliated organizations.

The ABA supports a full range of cycling disciplines, including:

  • BMX

  • Cyclo-cross

  • Gravel

  • Mountain Bike (Downhill, Enduro, Cross-Country, Marathon)

  • Para Cycling

  • Road and Track

In addition, the ABA’s Recreation & Transportation Committee collaborates with community groups to promote active transportation and advocate for cyclists’ rights across Alberta.

 

The ABA works closely with event organizers to sanction competitions and rides throughout the province, ensuring safe, inclusive, and well-supported cycling opportunities for Albertans.

How do I find a club?

Clubs affiliate with the Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA) each year. Every club is unique—some focus on recreational riding, some combine recreation and racing, and others are primarily competitive racing teams. Clubs also vary in the disciplines they support.

If you are unable to find a club that meets the needs of you and your friends, you can learn more about starting your own club through the resources provided on the ABA website.

What if I decide not to join a club?

That’s absolutely fine—you can still be a member of the ABA without joining a club.
When registering, simply select “I am racing as an Independent.” An Independent Fee will apply at registration.

Independent riders may purchase any type of membership; however, if you choose to race, you must compete in a plain, non-branded jersey. Independent riders cannot display club logos, non-affiliated team branding, or any form of advertising on their kit while racing.

I've found a club, now what?

Your club can help you determine which type of license you need in order to participate in their activities.

 

If you plan to race, you will need a race license. Information about the different license types is available on our Membership & Licensing page.

Most new racers begin in the lowest ability category offered for their discipline and work toward upgrading as they gain experience and results. While the majority of events are based on ability categories, some—such as Provincial Championships—are organized by age group instead.

We get it. We've all been there. Entering your first race, or bringing you little race to their first race can be scary!

We have created a first race guide and a BMX first race guide that can help you prepare and gives you some step by step guidelines. Don't be afraid at a race to ask questions! The ABA is onsite to help you wherever we can.
