Are you a parent looking on where to start? We can help! Cycling development in Alberta follows the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) framework — a nationally recognized model that guides how athletes grow from their first experiences in sport through to lifelong participation. Rather than rushing young riders into competition, LTAD emphasizes building the right skills at the right time, ensuring every cyclist develops confidence, technique, and a genuine love of the sport before progressing to the next stage. Whether your child is just discovering bikes or you're an adult returning to the sport, there's a place for you in the pathway. Scroll below to see a list of clubs with programs.
Long-Term Athlete Development
Free play, movement exploration, and building fundamental physical literacy through fun. No structured sport — just moving.
Building the ABCs — agility, balance, coordination, and speed — through a variety of activities. Sport sampling is encouraged.
The prime window for learning sport-specific skills. Ideal time to start structured cycling — focus on technique, confidence, and enjoyment across disciplines.
Building the engine — aerobic base, strength, and technical proficiency. Athletes begin to specialise in disciplines and compete regularly at the club and provincial level.
Optimising fitness and performance. Athletes pursue provincial team selection, national competitions, and begin engaging with Cycling Canada programs.
Peak performance and podium pursuit. Athletes train and compete at national and international levels with full performance support.
Cycling as a lifelong activity — recreational riding, community events, masters racing, or simply staying active. The pathway circles back here for everyone.
