Awards/Cups/Series

Alberta BMX Cup

The Alberta BMX Cup recognizes outstanding performance in provincial BMX competition.  Alberta BMX Cup points are earned at the following 6 Series Races, plus the Grands (the Grands are also known as the Series Final).

Alberta Cup Series

Series Format: In order to qualify for an Alberta BMX Cup series final standing, riders must compete in at least 4 of the 8 series races, plus the Grands. All races in the series, including the Grands are single points races. When calculating series results, the best 4 of 8 finishes are used, plus points earned at the Grands. Any ties on points are decided by the results achieved at the Grands.

Series Prizes
: Plates numbering 'p1' through 'p8' will be awarded to the 8 riders in each class accumulating the most points over the course of the series. Any other prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the Alberta BMX Association.

Upgrades: Should a rider upgrade to a new ability class part way through the series, their points will be transferred to their new ability class. For example, a Novice Girl with 200 points upgrading to Expert will begin her Expert career with 200 points.

Points: The following points table will be used for the provincial series.

NEW: In the case of combined classes (due to small numbers) the points structure will work as follows. This is the same for both combined ability and combined age: The riders will receive points from the table corresponding to the class they are registered in. The combined rider(s) will take those points to their class as they WOULD HAVE PLACED for THEIR ability. The awards of the day are still awarded as placed for that race.

Example # 1 - There is only one 8 Novice Male so he moves to the 8 Intermediate Male class for that race. He takes second place. He receives a second place award for that race and FIRST place NOVICE points towards his class SERIES ranking (which would be 8 Novice Male in this example)

Example # 2 - There is only one 7 Expert Female so she moves to the 8 Expert Female class for that race. She takes third place. She receives a third place award for that race and FIRST place Expert points towards her class SERIES ranking (which would be 7 Expert Female in this example)

BMX District Racing

The district racing system managed by the Alberta Bicycle Association will be used. This track-level district racing and points system is known by the name “Alberta District Points” and is separate from the Alberta BMX Cup, which was established to promote province-wide racing.

Districts:
All tracks are considered to be within the same district.

Number of Races:
Tracks are not required to hold a minimum or maximum number of races; each track may hold as many races per week as its goals and resources allow. If a normally scheduled race is cancelled however, any make-up race should be advertised at least two weeks in advance. Season: The season where Alberta BMX Points are accumulated for a specific year extends from January 1 to December 31 inclusive.

Scale of Races:
All races are single points races, except for Alberta Cup races, where double points are awarded. Provincial Championships, Western National Series Races, UCI Points Races and National Championships do not award Alberta BMX Series Points.

Alberta District Point Awards:

Alberta District Point awards will be given to the top 10 overall racers.  These awards are also for a set racing season and will be given out at the following years first Alberta Provincial race.  This includes Male and Female racers in all amateur ability categories.

Points Scale:
Points are awarded 8 places deep according to 3 different scales, one each for Novice, Intermediate and Expert / Cruiser.

Novice: 50, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10

Intermediate: 100, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20

Expert / Cruiser / Open: 150, 130, 110, 90, 70, 60, 50, 40

Upgrades:
Should a rider upgrade to a new ability class part way through the series, their points will be transferred to their new ability class. For example, a Novice Girl with 200 points upgrading to Expert will begin her Expert career with 200 points.

Class Combinations:
In the event that one or more classes are combined due to low attendance, all those racing in the combined class will receive points according to the scale for the highest skill level present in the combined class. For example, if some Intermediate boys are combined with some Expert boys, all riders in that combined class receive points according to the Expert points scale.

Alberta BMX Cup Provincial Races:
Participants in all Alberta BMX Cup races will receive double the number of points corresponding to their final rank at the event.

Ties:
Ties on points are first resolved by determining which rider competed most often over the course of the season. If a tie still exists, then performance at the Alberta BMX Cup final shall break the tie (for example: a 3rd place overall event finish beats a 5th place overall event finish).
